This project was inspired by his newest toy, a HexBug Nano (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hexbug.com\/nano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a bristle bot like commercial vibrot<\/a>).\u00a0 You know these projects.\u00a0 The process is almost more fun than the end results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.teachjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BristleBotCloseup.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2737\" title=\"Bristle Bot Close-up\" alt=\"Bristle Bot Close-up\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.teachjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BristleBotCloseup-300x222.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a>Starting Place: How to make a Bristle Bot, The Video<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">After seeing the HexBug Nano, I remembered seeing a series of vibrots (robots powered by vibrating motors [vibration motors from pagers and mobile phones] ).\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Off to Google for the quick search on &#8220;Bristle Bot&#8221; and there it was. The video and the instructions on how to build your own bristle bot.\u00a0 We watched it together. Twice.\u00a0 Plans began to gel and before we knew it we had ourselves a Self-Directed Learning project.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Yes, We were all in with this project!<\/strong> (You need to know my grandson is a real creator and inventor.\u00a0 As you can imagine, this is not his first creative effort.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span>A Small Bristle Bot Project Means Big Plans<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">We soon found we had a legitimate project.\u00a0 While the deadline was very soft the challenges were real. We did not have all the supplies, tools or skills.\u00a0 In fact, we have never done this before and had to solve problems along the way.\u00a0 It was clear this was a real project.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.teachjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BristleBotSuppliesPlus.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2738\" title=\"Bristle Bot Supplies Plus\" alt=\"Bristle Bot Supplies Plus\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.teachjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BristleBotSuppliesPlus-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"10\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><strong>Required Parts &amp; Equipment List<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Tooth Brush<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Vibrating Motor<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Wire<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Battery<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Foam Tape (or Glue Gun)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Solder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Equipment<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Needle Nose Piers<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Soldering Gun<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Dikes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Gloves<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Sticking Points in Bristle Bot Building<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">No Battery<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Soldering the wires onto the motor took many tries<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Doing the Unknown&#8230; We&#8217;d never done anything like this before.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Assemble Required<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.robotshop.com\/Images\/big\/en\/RB-See-135.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Vibrating motor\" alt=\"vibrating motor\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robotshop.com\/Images\/big\/en\/RB-See-135.jpg\" width=\"155\" height=\"186\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It was fun to see how this project came together. After the first day of the project did not produce results I was concerned my partner might lose interest.\u00a0 I was wrong.\u00a0 The next day he was asking if I had secured the necessary parts. I asked what parts would I need.\u00a0 He called me out with the exact list of items we needed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It is pretty clear when someone is interested in working on your project. This was clearly a good project.\u00a0 My partner was fully invested.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>End Results<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">After it took many attempts to connect the wires to the vibration motor we were happy just to get them connected. We hoped it\u00a0 was ready to run but no!
